Ford has announced a massive investment of approximately $5 billion<\/strong> as part of its new strategy to make electric vehicles (EVs) more accessible and affordable. The company plans to introduce its brand new Ford Universal EV Platform<\/strong> and the Ford Universal EV<\/a><\/em> Production System<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This investment aims to make EVs more attainable, with Ford planning to launch a new midsize electric pickup model starting at around $30,000<\/strong> in 2027<\/strong>. The investment will also create approximately 4,000 new jobs<\/strong> at facilities in Kentucky and Michigan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new Ford Universal EV Platform<\/strong> was designed by a dedicated team of engineers with a focus on efficiency and scalability. The goal is to reduce the number of vehicle parts by 20%, fasteners by 25%, and assembly line workstations by 40%, which will shorten production time by 15%. At the core of the platform are prismatic lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries<\/strong> that are free of cobalt and nickel. These batteries act as a structural sub-assembly for the vehicle’s floor, providing a low center of gravity, improving handling, and creating a quieter, more spacious interior. Instead of a traditional single assembly line, it uses an “assembly tree” concept where the front, rear, and structural battery sections of the vehicle are assembled simultaneously on separate lines before being combined. This method replaces dozens of small parts with large aluminum castings. Ford expects this system, to be implemented at its Louisville facility, to shorten assembly time by up to 40% compared to existing models, resulting in a 15% increase in speed<\/strong> overall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
