The system will provide diagnostic and treatment support in space without the presence of a doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As crewed space missions extend and move farther away from Earth, <strong>NASA<\/strong> is accelerating the development of solutions to meet the health needs of astronauts without relying on Earth. In this context, the agency is working with <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/tag\/google-news-and-content\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"64\">Google<\/a><\/em><\/strong> on an AI-based medical assistant called the <strong>Crew Medical Officer Digital Assistant (CMO-DA)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Astronauts on the International Space Station can currently communicate with mission control in real-time, receive regular medical resupplies, and return to Earth after six months. However, as <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/tag\/nasa\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"170\">NASA<\/a><\/em><\/strong> and its commercial partners\u2014including <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/tag\/elon-musk\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"159\">Elon Musk<\/a><\/em><\/strong>\u2019s <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/tag\/spacex\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"153\">SpaceX<\/a><\/em><\/strong>\u2014plan longer-duration missions to destinations like the Moon and Mars, these capabilities will no longer be available. This makes Earth-independent healthcare services critical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Healthcare in Space is Entrusted to AI<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"379\" src=\"https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/indir-16.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/indir-16.webp 720w, https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/indir-16-300x158.webp 300w, https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/indir-16-150x79.webp 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Operating on the <strong>Google Cloud&#8217;s Vertex AI platform<\/strong>, the <strong>CMO-DA<\/strong> can process multiple data types, including speech, text, and images. The system is being developed under a fixed-price subscription agreement with the Google Public Sector unit, which covers the costs of cloud services, application development infrastructure, and model training. <strong>NASA<\/strong> owns the application&#8217;s source code and is fine-tuning the models to be suitable for the space environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>CMO-DA<\/strong> has been tested in three scenarios so far: an ankle injury, flank pain, and ear pain. Three doctors, including an astronaut, evaluated the system&#8217;s performance. The diagnostic accuracy was measured at <strong>74% for flank pain<\/strong>, <strong>80% for ear pain<\/strong>, and <strong>88% for ankle injury<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NASA<\/strong> is proceeding with the project&#8217;s roadmap step by step. Plans include collecting data from medical devices and giving the model &#8220;situational awareness&#8221; of space-specific health conditions like microgravity. On the <strong>Google<\/strong> side, it&#8217;s not yet clear whether they will pursue regulatory approval for such a system to be used in doctors&#8217; offices on Earth.
