Tesla has stopped its years-long Dojo supercomputer project<\/strong>. CEO Elon Musk announced on his X account that it was not logical to scale up two chips at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tesla has closed the team behind the Dojo supercomputer<\/strong>, which was used in autonomous driving technologies. Elon Musk stated that resources would be focused on a single chip platform, and a multi-billion dollar chip deal was made with Samsung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Bloomberg, Tesla<\/a><\/em><\/strong> has decided to shut down the Dojo supercomputer team<\/strong>, which played an important role in autonomous driving technologies. Team leader Peter Bannon<\/strong> has left the company, and the remaining employees have been directed to Tesla’s other data center and computing projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jim Keller<\/strong>, the famous chip architect who started the Dojo project in 2018, had previously left the company. Ganesh Venkataramanan<\/strong>, who replaced him, also left in 2023. Most recently, Peter Bannon<\/strong>, who led the team, is also leaving Tesla. Additionally, it has been reported that 20 engineers from the team have moved to DensityAI<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dojo was a custom chip design program for Tesla to develop supercomputers that would train AI models for autonomous driving<\/strong>. The goal was to reduce dependence on manufacturers like Nvidia<\/strong> and AMD<\/strong>. However, CEO Elon Musk<\/a><\/em><\/strong> stated that it didn’t make sense for Tesla to scale two different AI chips simultaneously and that resources should be consolidated in one direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the past year, the company has undergone a restructuring process that saw the departure of many senior executives and the layoff of thousands of employees. As part of this, Tesla plans to increase its dependence on external technology partners. According to Bloomberg, the company will get support for high processing power from companies like Nvidia<\/strong> and AMD<\/strong> while working with Samsung Electronics<\/strong> for chip manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last month, Tesla signed a $16.5 billion AI chip supply deal<\/strong> with Samsung. These chips are expected to be used in autonomous vehicles<\/strong>, humanoid robots<\/strong>, and data centers<\/strong>. Musk said that Samsung’s Taylor factory in the U.S. will produce Tesla’s next-generation AI6 chips<\/strong>. The AI5 chips<\/strong> are planned to go into production at the end of 2026, and the AI6<\/strong> is expected to follow after that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
