While Tesla’s futuristic Cybertruck<\/strong> has generated a lot of buzz, it hasn’t achieved the desired sales figures. However, Tesla hasn’t given up on the Cybertruck; a smaller version<\/strong> might be on the way in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite creating a significant stir since its unveiling, the Tesla Cybertruck<\/a><\/em><\/strong> hasn’t achieved the same success in terms of sales. Yet, Tesla hasn’t abandoned its pickup truck plans. The futuristic truck could gain a smaller sibling in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lars Moravy<\/strong>, Tesla’s Vice President of Engineering, stated that producing a smaller pickup truck could be on their agenda. This could pave the way for the Cybertruck’s unconventional design to reach wider and global markets<\/strong>. Speaking at a Tesla owners and investors event in California, Moravy responded to a question about producing a more compact pickup by saying, “We were always talking about making a smaller pickup.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tesla is aware that the Cybertruck, in its current form, is too large for some markets<\/strong>. Producing a smaller pickup would not only help Tesla expand its presence in the pickup segment<\/strong> but also meet needs that its current product range doesn’t fully address. Moravy added, “As robotaxi services<\/strong> become more widespread in the future, we think this service could be beneficial not only for people but also for cargo transportation<\/strong>. We are seriously brainstorming in our design studio on how we can meet this need.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This statement could indicate Tesla’s interest in moving towards the mid-size truck<\/strong> or small van (panel van)<\/strong> segment. Currently, Tesla does not have a model in the “delivery vehicle” category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sales Well Below Expectations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At this point, functionality<\/strong> could also be an important sales factor. The Cybertruck hasn’t performed as well as Tesla expected in terms of sales. While initial interest from enthusiasts was high, sales later slowed down. According to Cox Automotive data<\/strong>, after selling approximately 39,000 Cybertrucks<\/strong> in all of 2024, Tesla has only sold around 11,000 units<\/strong> in the US so far this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The futuristic pickup, sold in the US with a price tag close to $100,000<\/strong>, is significantly higher than the $39,900 price<\/strong> Elon Musk suggested in 2019. The cheapest version currently starts at over $60,000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cybertruck is not available for sale in China and Europe<\/strong>, Tesla’s largest markets outside the US. In both markets, strict vehicle regulations make it extremely difficult to sell large and bulky trucks like the Cybertruck, which weighs over 6,000 kg<\/strong>. Tesla recently expanded Cybertruck sales to Canada and Mexico<\/strong> and announced in April that it would start selling the truck in Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Qatar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
