It appears Elon Musk’s ambitions for Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus<\/strong>, may be stalled before truly beginning. The company has halted production<\/strong> to focus on a brand-new design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Chinese sources, Tesla<\/a><\/em> stopped purchasing parts for Optimus<\/strong> about a month and a half ago. The company is reportedly re-evaluating both the robot’s hardware and software, leading to the current production halt. Tesla had aimed to produce 5,000 Optimus<\/a><\/em> units this year<\/strong>, but so far, only around 1,000 have been manufactured. With the cessation of part procurement, achieving this goal now seems unlikely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In early June, Milan Kovac<\/strong>, the head of the Optimus project, departed from Tesla. He was replaced by Ashok Elluswamy<\/strong>, Tesla’s head of AI software. This change suggests that the robot’s design will be further developed before mass production can resume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Current Optimus Has Numerous Issues<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Optimus also faces several technical problems<\/strong>. Currently, its motors overheat<\/strong>, its hands are not strong enough<\/strong>, some parts break easily<\/strong>, and its battery life is short<\/strong>. Due to these issues, Tesla is currently testing samples from various suppliers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the robots showcased last year put on a display, most of their movements were remotely controlled<\/strong>. At present, Optimus is only performing simple carrying tasks<\/strong> in Tesla’s battery workshops, and its performance is nowhere near that of human workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite these setbacks, Elon Musk’s ambitious plan<\/strong> remains in effect. He aims to produce 50,000 Optimus units next year<\/strong> and 500,000 by 2029<\/strong>. While these targets might seem ridiculous compared to the current situation, it’s worth noting that this is already a scaled-back version of Musk’s previously announced plan for 1 million units<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following all these developments, it’s believed that Tesla aims to reassure both investors and partners by introducing a new version of Optimus at this year’s shareholders’ meeting. However, getting things back on track won’t be an easy task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
