Developments in artificial intelligence<\/strong> and robotics<\/a><\/em><\/strong> are rapidly transforming the idea of robot armies into a tangible reality. Following the United States and China, France<\/strong> has also begun to take concrete steps<\/strong> toward establishing its own robot army<\/strong>. As AI and robotics evolve in parallel, the emergence of thinking robots<\/strong> capable of performing various tasks is becoming almost inevitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the first prototype models<\/strong> designed for use as household service robots<\/strong> are already under development. Robots intended for industrial facilities<\/strong> are even closer to becoming operational\u2014and we’ve already started seeing early examples of this. Naturally, this robotic breakthrough<\/strong> is also making its way into the military<\/strong> domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back in February, a Pentagon official<\/strong> told Defense One that the U.S. is actively exploring the development of killer robots<\/strong>. These next-generation weapons, classified by the Pentagon as Lethal Autonomous Weapons (LAW)<\/strong>, are not just part of America’s future plans, but also feature prominently in the defense strategies of many nations. This week, France made a similar announcement. General Bruno Baratz<\/strong> of the French Army stated that they plan to deploy robot soldiers<\/strong> to the battlefield by 2028<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

France actually began its initial efforts in this area back in 2021<\/strong>, setting a goal to create a robot army<\/strong> by 2040<\/strong> while the project was still in the concept stage<\/strong>. However, General Bruno Baratz now believes this goal could be achieved much sooner. According to him, France will possess a functioning robot army in the near future<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently, several robot prototypes<\/strong>\u2014some humanoid<\/strong>, others on wheels<\/strong> or in drone<\/strong> form\u2014were tested at a military base in France. These tests aimed to measure the performance<\/strong> of these robots in field conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

France envisions these robots being used in reconnaissance missions<\/strong>, mine clearance<\/strong>, and repair operations<\/strong>. However, experts closely following the AI field<\/strong> believe it\u2019s only a matter of time before these machines are used in direct combat<\/strong>. In fact, companies like Google<\/strong> and OpenAI<\/strong> are already loosening the ethical constraints<\/strong> designed to keep AI away from armed conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Statements from French officials also suggest that this trend is inevitable. General Tony Maffeis<\/strong> of the French Army commented:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
