Ilknur P\u0131narc\u0131<\/strong>, a math teacher and principal<\/strong> at Yeni\u00e7a\u011fa Multi-Program Anatolian High School<\/strong> in Bolu, Turkey<\/strong>, is using the metaverse<\/strong> to eliminate students\u2019 long-standing prejudice against math: \u201cWhen will I ever use this in real life?\u201d<\/em> With a creative approach, she helps students experience the real-world applications of math problems<\/strong> inside a virtual universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blending Mathematics with Metaverse Technology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

P\u0131narc\u0131 began working with Web3 tools<\/strong> and metaverse technologies<\/strong> three years ago. Her first step in merging these concepts with education came through the European Union\u2019s eTwinning project<\/strong>, where she created a digital universe<\/strong> to show students how math problems apply to daily life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the past year and a half, she has been teaching mathematics through the metaverse<\/strong>, allowing students to immerse themselves in interactive, scenario-based learning<\/strong> using avatars<\/strong> and virtual environments<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Mathematics is full of abstract concepts, rules, and formulas,” P\u0131narc\u0131 explained. “In order for a student to love something, they need to understand its meaning. When students can\u2019t link topics like derivatives<\/strong> or integrals<\/strong> to real life, they ask, \u2018What\u2019s the point of this?\u2019 This is where technology<\/strong> steps in.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She designed educational scenarios<\/strong> in the metaverse<\/strong> to visualize how math and geometry function in real-life contexts. For instance, for the topic of LCM and GCF<\/strong> (Least Common Multiple and Greatest Common Factor), which is usually explained through standard textbook questions, she created a virtual land plot<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A farmer avatar<\/strong> asks the students for help: \u201cThese are the dimensions of my land. I want to plant trees at equal intervals to minimize cost. How many saplings should I buy?\u201d Through these immersive problems, students clearly see how the concepts are used in real-world settings\u2014breaking down their resistance toward math.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students Embrace VR Learning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“Although the metaverse<\/strong> has been around for years, its integration into education is still very new. We need to analyze it well,\u201d P\u0131narc\u0131 noted. \u201cStudents in high school are highly interested in this space. Wearing VR headsets<\/strong>, stepping into that world, and not knowing what to expect\u2014it all sparks curiosity.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has opened the virtual math laboratory<\/strong> to students from other schools as well and emphasized the importance of teachers becoming more familiar with technology-enhanced education<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

eTwinning Project Trains Teachers and Students Across Borders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Through the eTwinning project<\/strong>, P\u0131narc\u0131 and her team provided training to 10 math teachers<\/strong> from 9 provinces in Turkey<\/strong>, and 5 international teachers<\/strong> from Spain, Romania, Moldova, and Jordan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, under Turkey\u2019s Ministry of Education\u2019s “Mathematics Mobilization” program<\/strong>, the Meta-Mat Project<\/strong> was implemented, reaching 57 students<\/strong> from 13 different schools<\/strong>. According to a Mathematics Attitude Scale<\/strong> used in the study, students’ interest in math rose from 2 to 4 out of 5<\/strong>\u2014a significant improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe’ve successfully captured students\u2019 interest. Now, we will begin to measure how this method affects academic performance<\/strong>,\u201d said P\u0131narc\u0131.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
