On April 2<\/strong>, former U.S. President Donald Trump<\/strong> announced a sweeping plan to impose import tariffs, warning of potential retaliation<\/strong> from other nations. While some tariffs were later suspended, especially for select countries, Trump’s continued emphasis on tariffs against China<\/strong> has kept the possibility of a global trade war<\/strong> alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amid this geopolitical uncertainty, some blockchain leaders argue that rising tariffs<\/strong> could serve as a catalyst for governments to adopt blockchain networks<\/strong>. According to Truebit<\/strong> executives, blockchain technology could help enforce these tariffs fairly<\/strong> and transparently<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Federico Kattan, Truebit’s Chief Technology Officer<\/strong>, told Cointelegraph<\/strong> that blockchain provides a powerful solution for offering proof of origin<\/strong> and verifying supply chains<\/strong>. He gave an example where a company could exploit tariff loopholes by assembling and packaging products in low-tariff countries, thereby reducing duties from 58% to just 10%. Blockchain, however, could prevent such manipulation by authenticating the true origin<\/strong> of goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through its immutable public ledger<\/strong>, blockchain enhances supply chain transparency<\/strong>, making it harder for companies to commit fraud\u2014a practice that costs global economies trillions of dollars<\/strong> in import scams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a report from the Tax Foundation<\/strong>, Trump’s tariffs could impact over $2.4 trillion<\/strong> worth of imported goods. As other countries retaliate with their own measures, this number could climb even higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Truebit<\/strong>, a blockchain network that allows users to integrate verifiable computation<\/strong> into various applications, is already working with software vendors serving the U.S. government. The company is also participating in an EU-backed project<\/strong> exploring the role of Web3<\/a><\/em><\/strong> in global supply chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Truebit CEO Jason Teutsch<\/strong> stated, \u201cWe are not yet in direct talks with governments, but we are in contact with vendors who aim to work with them. Nicholas Roberts-Huntley<\/strong>, CEO of Concrete & Glow Finance<\/strong>, highlighted that rising trade tensions could severely impact the physical infrastructure<\/strong> of blockchain systems, fragment regulatory frameworks, and lead to user censorship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He emphasized, \u201cAggressive trade policies<\/strong> and retaliatory measures can create significant obstacles for node operators<\/strong>, validators<\/strong>, and other key players within blockchain ecosystems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the world faces a new wave of economic nationalism<\/strong>, the clash between traditional trade policies and decentralized technologies could either be a tipping point for adoption<\/strong>\u2014or a challenge to survival<\/strong>\u2014for Web3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
