The AI<\/strong> industry has grown at a phenomenal pace over the past few years, driven by large language models (LLMs<\/strong>) and chatbots based on them. In particular, the ChatGPT<\/strong> chatbot released by OpenAI<\/strong> has revolutionized the field and reached hundreds of millions of users. The OpenAI o1<\/strong>, which was demonstrated in September and fully released in December, stands out as the most powerful LLM<\/strong> to date. Although it operates slower than its predecessors, OpenAI o1<\/strong> can solve much more complex problems and even exhibits the ability to “reason.” However, it now has a key competitor: the DeepSeek R1<\/strong> model from the Chinese artificial intelligence<\/strong> company DeepSeek<\/strong>, which offers similar capabilities at much lower costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to its efficiency, DeepSeek-R1<\/strong> has already established itself among the top AI<\/strong> projects. In this article, we will explore questions such as: What is DeepSeek<\/strong>? Unlike most AI companies in China<\/strong>, DeepSeek<\/strong> operates independently of tech giants such as Baidu<\/strong> and Alibaba<\/strong>. The interesting thing is that, although it does not have the support of technology giants<\/strong>, it is even challenging the U.S. company OpenAI<\/strong>, let alone competing at the top of China\u2019s artificial intelligence industry<\/strong>! DeepSeek’s<\/strong> newest LLM, the R1<\/strong>, works more efficiently than OpenAI’s o1<\/strong>, according to many third-party chip tests<\/strong>. While DeepSeek-R1<\/strong> requires a much lower GPU<\/strong> to train than OpenAI o1<\/strong>, this increased efficiency also reduces the cost for the end user. Not just reducing it\u2014but eliminating it entirely! DeepSeek-R1<\/strong> is available for free<\/strong>, at least for now. That\u2019s why it has the potential to become the biggest competitor to OpenAI<\/strong> and other U.S. AI applications<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May 2024<\/strong>, DeepSeek-V2<\/strong> was released, and the company suddenly became the center of China’s artificial intelligence industry<\/strong> because it was much lower in cost than other companies’ LLMs<\/strong>. This sparked a price-cutting war<\/strong> among Chinese companies<\/strong>. Other tech companies such as ByteDance, Tencent, Baidu,<\/strong> and Alibaba<\/strong> began lowering the prices of their own AI models<\/strong> to compete with DeepSeek<\/strong>. DeepSeek<\/strong>, on the other hand, has managed to remain profitable<\/strong> despite its low price<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six months later, in December 2024<\/strong>, DeepSeek-V3<\/strong> was released. This model cost about $6 million<\/strong> to train. However, tests showed that it performed head-to-head<\/strong> with GPT-4o<\/strong> and Claude 3.5 Sonnet<\/strong>, which were created at much higher costs. DeepSeek-V3<\/strong> even outperformed Llama 3.1<\/strong> and Qwen 2.5<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the real sensation was DeepSeek-R1<\/strong>, which was released on January 20, 2025<\/strong>. DeepSeek-R1<\/strong> was introduced as a competitor to OpenAI’s latest model, o1<\/strong>. What distinguished the o1 model<\/strong> from other LLMs<\/strong> was that it was trained with the reinforcement learning (RL) technique<\/strong> and had reasoning skills<\/strong>. A reasoning LLM<\/strong> can follow a train of thought<\/strong> before responding to the user, making logical inferences<\/strong> and arriving at very accurate conclusions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DeepSeek-R1<\/strong> stands out as an artificial intelligence model<\/strong> that is trained with the RL technique<\/strong> and can reason<\/strong>, just like o1<\/strong>. So much so that the U.S. stock market<\/strong> opened today (January 27, 2025<\/strong>) with a sharp decline<\/strong> in the share values of technology giants<\/strong>, especially Nvidia shares<\/strong>. The success of DeepSeek<\/strong> in terms of price\/performance<\/strong> and the fact that it can offer a service similar to OpenAI’s<\/strong>\u2014which normally comes at a very high fee<\/strong>\u2014for free<\/strong> has been interpreted as the transfer of competition<\/strong> between China<\/strong> and the U.S.<\/strong> into the artificial intelligence field<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, it suggests that DeepSeek-R1<\/strong> has outperformed o1<\/strong> in prestigious tests such as the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME)<\/strong> and MATH<\/strong>. The performance of the two models in successfully solving complex problems<\/strong> can yield different results<\/strong> across different tests<\/strong>. However, it appears that both models perform close to each other<\/strong>. Again, this study shows that DeepSeek-R1 and its variants promise much lower costs than o1 and its variants, even if their performance is equal. In math tasks<\/strong>, DeepSeek-R1<\/strong> performs strongly<\/strong>. In the AIME 2024<\/strong> test, which evaluates advanced multi-step mathematical reasoning<\/strong>, DeepSeek-R1<\/strong> scored 79.8%<\/strong>, narrowly outpacing OpenAI o1-1217<\/strong>, which scored 79.2%<\/strong>. On the MATH-500<\/strong>, which tests LLMs<\/strong> with high school-level math problems<\/strong>, DeepSeek-R1<\/strong> achieves an impressive score of 97.3%<\/strong>, while OpenAI o1-1217<\/strong> remains at 96.4%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is also fierce competition<\/strong> between the two leading LLMs<\/strong> in coding tasks<\/strong>. In the Codeforces<\/strong> test, OpenAI o1-1217<\/strong> comes out on top with 96.6%<\/strong>, while DeepSeek-R1<\/strong> takes second place with only a small margin<\/strong>, scoring 96.3%<\/strong>. In the SWE-bench Verified<\/strong> test, which evaluates reasoning skills<\/strong> in software engineering tasks<\/strong>, DeepSeek-R1<\/strong>, which received 49.2%<\/strong>, outperforms OpenAI o1-1217<\/strong>, which received 48.9%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to general knowledge<\/strong>, the two models are closely matched<\/strong>, but OpenAI<\/strong> holds the leadership position<\/strong>. GPQA Diamond<\/strong>, which measures the ability to answer general knowledge questions<\/strong> through factual reasoning<\/strong>, gives DeepSeek-R1<\/strong> a score of 71.5%<\/strong>. OpenAI o1-1217<\/strong>, on the other hand, is the clear winner<\/strong> of this test with a score of 75.7%<\/strong>. In the MMLU<\/strong>, which measures multidisciplinary skills<\/strong>, OpenAI o1-1217<\/strong> scores 91.8%<\/strong>, surpassing DeepSeek-R1<\/strong>, which scores 90.8%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
