The hacker behind this massive theft, Ilya “Dutch” Lichtenstein<\/strong>, was sentenced to 5 years in prison<\/strong> by a federal court in Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lichtenstein and his wife, Heather Morgan<\/strong>, were arrested in 2022<\/strong>. In August 2023<\/strong>, the pair pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering<\/strong>. According to the U.S. Department of Justice<\/strong>, Lichtenstein and Morgan laundered millions of dollars using “numerous sophisticated money laundering techniques.” These included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Converting Bitcoins<\/strong> into other cryptocurrencies<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n

  • Purchasing gold<\/strong> to obscure the trail<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Despite the gravity of the crime, Lichtenstein’s 5-year sentence<\/strong> is significantly lower than the 20-year maximum sentence<\/strong> typically imposed for such offenses in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
