The Balance is Shifting: ChatGPT Slows Down, Gemini Accelerates

While ChatGPT maintains its global leadership, its growth rate is noticeably slowing down. Google’s Gemini model, on the other hand, is rapidly coming to the fore in areas such as downloads, user growth, and time spent in the app.

ChatGPT, the long-time leader in the AI market, has now entered a slower growth curve, as new data indicates. A recent report published by market analysis company Sensor Tower reveals that while 50% of global mobile downloads and 55% of monthly active users still belong to ChatGPT, the growth rate has significantly declined.

One’s Loss is Another’s Gain

In contrast, Google’s Gemini model has started to take the lead in critical metrics such as download growth, monthly active user count, and time spent in the app. This momentum signals that Gemini could rapidly close the market share gap with ChatGPT. It is reported that OpenAI’s recently issued internal “emergency” note, which reportedly caused alarm within the company, was prepared based on this picture. Sam Altman had instructed employees to improve the experience in ChatGPT and postponed other projects.

Recent data reveals that competition is still intense. As of November 2025, while ChatGPT’s global monthly active user count increased by 180% annually, the annual increase in Gemini’s user count reached 170%. However, the picture changes when looking at the short term. In the August-November period, ChatGPT’s global active user count increased by only about 6%, reaching a total of 810 million.

On the other hand, Google Gemini grew by approximately 30% in the same period. It is stated that this leap stems from the popularity created by the company’s new image generation model Nano Banana in September. The fact that Android users in the US are increasingly using Gemini directly through the operating system also provides Google with a strategic advantage.

Download data draws a similar picture. While ChatGPT’s global download count increased by 85% annually as of November, it lagged behind the average growth of the entire market. The biggest leap was seen in Perplexity with 215%, followed by Gemini with 190%.

Balances are also changing in terms of the time users spend in the application. According to Sensor Tower, the daily usage time of Gemini users increased by 120% in recent months, rising to 11 minutes. The Nano Banana model is again at the center of this increase. On the ChatGPT side, daily usage time increased by only 6% in the same period. In fact, usage time in November remained 10% below July data.
