Sandbox Hosts Its First Wedding

The decentralized, blockchain-based metaverse, The Sandbox, hosted its first-ever hybrid digital and real-life wedding.

Singaporean couple Joanne Tham and Clarence Chan, CEO of the music company Bandwagon, celebrated their marriage with a “70s disco glam” theme on September 17.

The event took place in a digital replica of Singapore’s renowned Alkaff Mansion within The Sandbox metaverse.

While the couple was physically present at a real-world hotel venue with some guests, their digital counterparts in the form of avatars were simultaneously present in the Sandbox metaverse, viewable by remote attendees.

The event was facilitated by Sebastien Borget, co-founder and chief operating officer of The Sandbox, who appeared as a digital avatar.

Following their first virtual kiss as a married couple, the couple left the Metaverse to continue their celebrations in the offline world.

The wedding was a collaborative effort involving 1.Group, Smobler Studios, and The Sandbox. The web3 design agency, Smobler Studios, played a key role in recreating the Alkaff Mansion and its distinctive architecture within The Sandbox. 1.Group is responsible for managing the actual Alkaff Mansion in the real world.

For those interested in viewing this event in greater detail within the Sandbox universe, they can visit the YouTube page of Smobler Studios.

There, viewers can witness how this joyous occasion unfolded. Such events are increasingly becoming indicators of the Metaverse’s growing value and potential.
