New Toyota bZ5 to Launch in China with BYD Technology

Toyota is preparing to launch its new all-electric SUV model, the bZ5, in China. This strategic move aims to bolster Toyota’s presence in the global electric vehicle market, where it has lagged behind competitors. The bZ5’s battery and powertrain systems will be supplied by Chinese EV giant BYD.

The new bZ5, from FAW-Toyota, is officially set to go on sale on June 10th.

Range, Powertrain, and Pricing

Built on the e-TNGA platform, the bZ5 will be available with two different range options based on CLTC (China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle) standards. The entry-level version, offering a range of 550 km, is expected to have a pre-sale price of approximately $18,000. For those seeking longer distances, a version with a 630 km CLTC range will also be available.

A standout feature of the Toyota bZ5 is its power unit. Equipped with BYD Blade batteries, the bZ5 is powered by a 200 kW (268 hp) front-wheel-drive electric motor supplied by FinDreams, a BYD subsidiary.

Design and Technology

The bZ5 is also ambitious in its driving assistance systems, featuring the Momenta 5.0 (Level 2) advanced urban driving assistance system with 33 sensors.

In terms of design, the bZ5 presents a sporty aesthetic with a “hammerhead shark” style front fascia and an aerodynamic fastback profile. Hidden door handles, LED headlights, and 21-inch alloy wheels contribute to its modern appeal. Dimensions are stated as 4780 mm in length, 1866 mm in width, 1510 mm in height, and a 2880 mm wheelbase.

Interior and Safety Features

The interior prioritizes simplicity and digitalization. A prominent 15.6-inch multimedia screen and a digital instrument cluster take center stage. Comfort is emphasized with a 1.44-square-meter panoramic glass roof, 256-color ambient lighting, and four different “candy modes.” For safety, nine airbags are offered as standard.
