Metaverse Investments Decline, Q2 Profits Plummet

The Metaverse, which has seen a surge in investment interest, particularly after Facebook’s rebranding to Meta in October 2021, is facing a less optimistic outlook in the second quarter.

One such Metaverse platform, Sandbox (SAND), experienced significant investment interest in its virtual land following the rebrand. However, the prospects for this quarter appear less promising.

The Metaverse, particularly the ‘LAND flipping’ on platforms like Sandbox, experienced its most aggressive profit round on November 24, 2021, nearly a month following Meta’s rebranding announcement.

However, since then, there’s been a noticeable downturn in overall business profits, as highlighted in a Messari report dated July 26.

An interesting observation is that between January 2020 and the end of 2021, there were only 19 days when total land transactions resulted in losses, with the largest negative balance recorded on December 31, 2021. In stark contrast, the first half of 2022 alone saw traders incurring losses on 23 different days.

Post-November 2021, there has been a seven-month consecutive decline in monthly profitability. The number of negative trading days began to increase in March 2022, reaching its peak in June 2022. This period, particularly the second quarter, witnessed the most significant losses.

The volatility in the market has led to a substantial increase in the number of days recording a net loss in total trading volume.

The pervasive downturn in the crypto market has made the translation of land real estate into the Metaverse considerably more challenging than before, indicating that digital terrain is still an emerging market.

However, in a contrasting perspective, experts predict that sales of Metaverse real estate could surpass $5 billion by 2026, despite the current challenges.
