Meta has recently taken a significant step in its investment into the metaverse by announcing the development of a new open-source operating system called Horizon OS.
This operating system is designed for their wearable mixed reality headsets, including the upcoming Quest 3 and previous models. Unlike its predecessors that were based on Android, Horizon OS is entirely open source.
The decision comes after Meta, led by Mark Zuckerberg, invested heavily in the metaverse, which has yet to see the expected level of interest.
By making Horizon OS open source, Meta aims to encourage a broader range of developers to create apps for the Quest headsets. Furthermore, the operating system is also available for use by third-party companies that produce mixed reality headsets, potentially expanding its reach and utility in the market.
More applications will be developed
According to Mark Zuckerberg, the newly announced Horizon OS will serve as a critical milestone for the metaverse ecosystem.
This operating system will enable developers to create and customize applications such as productivity tools, fitness programs, video streaming services, and 2D games within the Horizon OS framework. Additionally, Meta plans to rebrand its app store as the “Horizon Store,” which will be the central hub for accessing all these applications.
While Meta has refrained from disclosing detailed information about Horizon OS, the company is optimistic that this initiative will broaden the scope of the metaverse ecosystem. However, the success of this endeavor remains uncertain. It’s important to remember that despite investing billions of dollars into the metaverse, Zuckerberg and his team have yet to see the anticipated engagement and response.
