Meta Ends Support for Quest VR Headset: Impact on Social Features

Meta has announced its decision to discontinue support for the virtual reality headset it launched four years ago. The Meta Quest VR headset will see a reduction in social features and will only receive updates, including critical bug fixes and security patches, until 2024.

The company has officially confirmed that it is ending support for the original Quest VR headset. It was communicated that users of the Meta Quest virtual reality headset will not receive any new features, and updates will be limited to critical bug fixes and security patches until 2024.

Social features will also be unavailable

In a screenshot of the email sent by Meta to users, it is evident that the Quest will remain operational. However, users will no longer be able to create or join a party, and those with access to Meta Horizon Home’s social features will lose this access starting March 5, 2023.

Launched in 2019 under the Oculus brand, the Quest is the predecessor to the widely popular Quest 2 VR headset, which was released in late 2020. Despite their significant hardware differences, both headsets received largely the same new features.

The Quest 2 is equipped with Qualcomm’s dedicated AR and VR headset chip, the Snapdragon XR2, a processor from 2020. Meanwhile, the original Quest is powered by the Snapdragon 835/Kryo 280 platform, a processor from 2017.
