Meta Accelerates the Smart Glasses Race with Aria Gen 2

Meta has shared new technical details about its Aria Gen 2 smart glasses, focusing on advancements in artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and hardware innovations. The Aria Gen 2 is a research-focused prototype equipped with eye-tracking, hand gesture recognition, and various sensors. Thanks to its precise 3D tracking system, it can even be used in advanced applications like training robotic hands.

Meta’s next-generation experimental smart glasses are not yet intended for consumer use, but rather serve as part of the company’s ongoing research in AR and AI technologies.

Packed with Cutting-Edge Features: From Eye Tracking to Heartbeat Monitoring

Aria Gen 2 comes with sensors capable of tracking eye movement and cameras that can follow hand and object interactions. It can detect intricate details such as blinking, gaze direction, and pupil dilation. Its 3D tracking capabilities are so advanced that they can assist in teaching movements to robotic systems.

Other impressive hardware components include a heartbeat sensor placed in the nose pad and a contact microphone that enhances audio capture in noisy environments. Compared to the previous model, Aria Gen 2 is lighter and available in eight different sizes.

The device is equipped with a 12 MP camera, seven spatial microphones, an ambient light sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, stereo speakers, and a USB-C port.

A Platform for Research, Not a Commercial Product—Yet

Meta emphasizes that Aria Gen 2 is not designed as a commercial product but rather as a research testbed. While Meta continues its open development approach, reports suggest that Apple is also preparing to make a move in this space in the coming year. Whether Apple will manage to release a final product remains uncertain, but in a field advancing this rapidly, staying ahead is critical.
