Mark Zuckerberg has presented a future vision where everyone will have a personal superintelligence assistant. Meta is grounding this vision in wearable devices like smart glasses.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced his vision of “personal superintelligence” in an open letter. According to Zuckerberg, in the coming years, every individual will have AI assistants powered by “superintelligence” that they can use to achieve their personal goals. The most natural way to use these assistants, it appears, will be through smart glasses.
Meta Is Not Joking
In his letter, Zuckerberg stated that AI systems with superhuman capacities, i.e., Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), are no longer far off. The CEO described the development as slow but “undeniable,” clearly indicating Meta’s commitment in this field.
To this end, Meta recently made a massive investment of $14.3 billion, acquiring a 49% stake in Scale AI. With this move, a special “superintelligence lab” was established under the leadership of Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang. Meta has also recruited top AI experts from competitors like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Anthropic, and Apple with high salary offers. Some offers are said to have reached $100 million, with most ranging between $1 million and $1.4 million.
However, it is also emphasized that Meta cannot solely attract talent with money. Zuckerberg’s letter is seen as a strategic move appealing to researchers who value ethical principles and a long-term mission.
Therefore, the point that distinguishes Meta’s goal from its competitors was also highlighted. Zuckerberg stated that their goal is “different from other companies in the industry who believe that superintelligence should automate all valuable work and humanity should subsist on the distribution of the resulting products.” This statement indirectly contrasts with views often expressed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who believes that AI will lead to a kind of universal basic income system.
Glasses in the Foreground
Zuckerberg reiterated his insistence on smart glasses, believing that future “primary computing devices” will not be phones but personal glasses. Therefore, it seems that personalized superintelligences for everyone will appear especially in the form of wearable glasses, at least according to Meta’s goal. Meta has clearly carved out a unique place in this field with its Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta Performance AI glasses, developed through its partnership with EssilorLuxottica. While it has competitors, Meta is quite ahead in this area.
