Tech giants often draw inspiration from mythology and space for naming their new products. Google has announced that the name Gemini, used for all its AI applications since 2023, has a similar origin. Gemini is the English name of the astrological sign Gemini.
According to the Google DeepMind team, the project’s initial name was actually Titan. However, Jeff Dean, one of the project’s technical leaders, did not like this name. Therefore, he chose another space-inspired name: Gemini. The reason for this decision was the structure of artificial intelligence.
The name of artificial intelligence is from mythology
The team decided that the dual personality of the twins, their ability to adapt quickly, interact with a large number of people, and see events from different perspectives were suitable attributes for artificial intelligence technologies. Google, in turn, uses its own “twins” for these studies: the DeepMind team and the Brain team developed Gemini together.
According to Google’s statements, another reason for choosing this name is to refer to Project Gemini, which tested technology between 1965 and 1968, before the Apollo Moon Landing Mission. Additionally, the firm considered different celestial bodies during the naming process. However, the names of the new artificial intelligence systems ended up being names like Nano, Flash, and Pro, rather than entirely new names.
