Google is reportedly testing an innovative artificial intelligence tool called “Genesis” that aims to produce news content.
According to insider sources who spoke with The New York Times, this cutting-edge AI technology is intended to support journalists and has been showcased to executives at News Corp, which owns leading U.S. publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal.
“Genesis,” Google’s newest venture, excels at creating news stories from any given data, covering a wide range of topics from current events and beyond.
Described as a “journalistic personal assistant,” Google envisions that Genesis will enable journalists to dedicate their time to more critical stories.
Mixed Feelings About “Genesis”
Jenn Crider, a spokesperson for Google, stressed, “Genesis is not designed to diminish the crucial role journalists play in creating and verifying stories.”
Prof. Jeff Jarvis from the City University of New York commented on the technology’s potential from two perspectives. “Journalists should think about using it if it consistently delivers accurate information,” Jarvis stated. However, he also warned that certain stories demand a deep understanding of cultural nuances, implying that depending too much on such technology could weaken trust in news organizations.
AI’s Role in Newsrooms Sparks Debate
News organizations worldwide are grappling with the challenge of integrating AI technologies into their operations.
Various outlets, including The Times, NPR, and Insider, have shown an interest in exploring AI’s capabilities, highlighting its potential significance in an environment where timing and accuracy are paramount.
The Associated Press (AP) has utilized AI for reporting tasks, such as generating corporate summaries. Furthermore, AP has announced plans to allow access to its news archive by the AI model Chat GPT.
On the other hand, organizations like NBC News and The Times have raised concerns about the unauthorized collection of data by artificial intelligence systems.
