Margrethe Vestager, the European Union’s (EU) antitrust chief, is advocating for the establishment of healthy competition within metaverses.
In remarks made at a Brussels event, European Commissioner for Competition and Digital Affairs Vestager emphasized the importance of defining what constitutes healthy competition in the Metaverse.
She also commented on the influence of the artificial intelligence service, ChatGPT, highlighting the growing significance of digital innovation and its implications for competition policy.
Volman: We Need to Make People Feel Safe
The European Commission is gearing up to introduce policies on virtual worlds this May. Yvo Volman, a high-ranking official within the European Commission, recently highlighted the necessity for the European Union to integrate considerations such as non-discrimination, user security, and data privacy in the governance of the metaverse.
In his statement, Volman emphasized, “We aim to ensure that the developments within virtual worlds are in harmony with our European principles from the outset, adhering strictly to values like respect for privacy, non-discrimination, and equality.”
He further elaborated in his speech, “Our goal is to create environments in virtual worlds where people feel as secure as they do in the physical world, if not more so.”
