Adobe has unveiled an AI-powered tool designed to enhance the quality of low-resolution videos and GIFs. Named “Project Res-Up,” this innovation showcases promising results, particularly on inferior-quality visuals.
While the technology is still in its experimental phase and hasn’t been transformed into a full-fledged application or feature, its potential is undeniably vast.
Project Res-Up employs artificial intelligence to scrutinize and subsequently elevate image quality. As a testament to its capabilities, Adobe presented a snippet from the 1947 film “The Red House.” The tool successfully amplified the resolution from 480 x 360 to an impressive 1280 x 960, marking a 675% surge in total pixel count.
The results in the examples are amazing
The enhanced image was notably sharper, with the AI effectively reducing much of the blur and even introducing finer details, such as individual hair strands. While some remnants of artifacts remain, when compared to the initial low-quality video, the improvement is striking, particularly when juxtaposed with other upscaling tools like Nvidia’s TV Shield or Microsoft’s Video Super Resolution.
In a video featuring a baby elephant, the prowess of Project Res-Up is evident in how it accentuates the image, particularly highlighting the texture of the animal’s skin. The wrinkles on the skin are more pronounced, and other details, like the sun’s reflection on water, are made more discernible. The release date for Project Res-Up remains uncertain.
