OpenAI has recently enhanced its widely-used generative AI chatbot, ChatGPT, by introducing the Read Aloud feature.
This new functionality allows ChatGPT users to have the chatbot’s responses read out loud in one of 37 languages. Currently accessible in the web version, this addition continues OpenAI’s commitment to expanding the capabilities of ChatGPT.
ChatGPT’s Read Aloud feature is designed for users on the move, offering a choice among five voice options for auditory responses. Capable of speaking and reading in 37 languages, this feature intelligently detects the language of the text it’s tasked to vocalize. It’s compatible with both GPT-4 and GPT-3.5, broadening its utility.
The utility of ChatGPT continues to grow, especially in terms of voice interaction. Following the launch of a voice chat feature in September last year, which allows users to pose questions verbally without needing to type, this new Read Aloud feature enables ChatGPT to audibly read its written responses.
Users have the option to set the tool to always respond verbally, enhancing accessibility and convenience. On mobile devices, activating the feature requires a long press on the desired message, enabling not just the Read Aloud functionality but also providing control for forward and backward navigation through responses. Web users will find a speaker icon beneath the corresponding response to facilitate easy access to this feature.
