China’s Metaverse Move to the World Cup

For those eager to experience World Cup matches in a virtual stadium setting, China has made a move. Two significant initiatives in the country are presenting the matches to audiences in virtual environments.

Despite facing global criticism and embargoes due to its policies, China continues to forge ahead. Initially making gradual progress in graphics technologies, the country is now making strides in the realm of the metaverse.

In the world of the World Cup metaverse

While the concept of the metaverse is often seen as dominated by Western entities, especially Meta, China is quietly yet intensively advancing its own initiatives. The World Cup has served as a testing ground for these developments.

The Chinese government has announced a new initiative aimed at creating a virtual reality industry worth $48 billion and achieving sales of approximately 25 million VR headsets by 2026. Migu, a video platform, and ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, are showcasing the World Cup matches in the metaverse.

Individuals equipped with VR headsets supported by these companies will have the opportunity to watch the matches live in virtual rooms, either alone or with friends. Additionally, these companies have hinted at surprising the audience with occasional special events.
