Apple has secured a new patent related to a camera and flash system hidden within the screen. This technology could be integrated into the Apple Watch, paving the way for video calls directly from the wrist.
Apple is taking its plans to integrate a camera into the Apple Watch a step further. The company has obtained a new patent for a camera and flash system concealed under the screen, which can be applied to screen-equipped devices like both the iPhone and Apple Watch. This technology features a camera design that is invisible when not in use, becoming active only when needed.
Coming to iPhone and Apple Watch
According to details shared by Apple Insider, Apple has received a new patent titled “Electronic Devices With Two-Stage Displays.” This patent indicates that the screen could have a two-layer structure. The inner layer displays pixels, while the outer layer provides light modulation, making components like the camera and flash visible when required. This approach maintains aesthetics while preserving functionality.
Essentially, the patent emphasizes how camera bumps or notches on the screen affect the design of modern devices. Apple’s goal is to make these components completely invisible, thereby preserving the device’s form. For those who missed it, the idea of the Apple Watch transforming into a device capable of video calls from the wrist has been a long-standing discussion.
Therefore, Apple is expected to focus on its smartwatch models first, followed by iPhones. Of course, not every patent necessarily translates into a final product. However, it’s now officially confirmed that Apple is working in this area. Although the company is not currently known to be planning a camera-equipped Watch model, this scenario could change in the long term with under-display camera technology.
