Apple Considers Partnership with Meta on Artificial Intelligence

The two giant companies, long-time rivals, have been discussing the potential integration of Meta’s generative AI model into Apple’s Intelligence system. According to sources, Facebook’s parent company, Meta Platforms, has been in talks with Apple about incorporating their generative AI model into Apple Intelligence, the newly announced AI system for iPhones and other devices.

Apple and Meta discuss AI partnership

Meta and other companies developing generative AI are looking to leverage the extensive distribution network Apple provides through its iPhones. They aim to achieve this similarly to how Apple utilizes the App Store on the iPhone.

Apple, a late entrant to the generative AI field, has developed its own small AI models but has announced plans to rely on partners for more complex or specific tasks. When Apple Intelligence was unveiled at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month, OpenAI’s ChatGPT was announced as Apple’s first partner.

“We wanted to start with the best,” Apple software lead Craig Federighi said, noting that ChatGPT “represents the best choice for our users today.” He also mentioned that Apple intends to integrate Google’s Gemini as well.

Sources familiar with the discussions have indicated that Google and Meta, along with AI startups Anthropic and Perplexity, are in talks with Apple to bring their generative AIs to Apple Intelligence.
