The UK-based electric motor company Yasa broke its own record by achieving a power density of 59 kW/kg with a short-term peak power of 750 kW. This development signals a new era in electric motors.
Yasa, the UK-based electric motor company owned by Mercedes, broke its own record in terms of power density. The company, which reached 750 kW in short-term peak power, thus achieved a record value of 59 kW/kg for its electric motors.
In July, Yasa achieved a power of 550 kW with a weight of 13.1 kg with its new axial-flux motor prototype, which corresponded to a power density of 42 kW/kg. According to the company’s statement, the latest tests with a lighter version significantly exceeded this value.
The weight of the last tested motor is around 12.7 kg, largely surpassing the peak power performance from July. The 59 kW/kg power density is approximately 40 percent higher than the previous tests.
Yasa states that the current prototype was not developed solely for peak power performance. The company estimates that the “continuous power, which is very important for the new motor, will also be around 350-400 kW.” Yasa states that more details regarding the development of the said prototype motor will be shared soon.
Yasa is a company specializing in compact axial-flux motors. In these motors, the magnetic field travels along the rotation axis of the rotor, rather than outward from the center of the rotor as in classic motors. This arrangement increases power density and generally makes the motors smaller. Axial-flux motors are usually developed in a disc-like form due to their component arrangement.
Mercedes-Benz acquired the Oxford-based company in 2021. Two years later, Yasa introduced the Mercedes-Benz Vision One-Eleven concept car with its axial-flux motors. This technology evolved into the AMG GT XX, which is equipped with three motors and broke several world records in August thanks to its efficiency and power output. The technology is not yet used in Mercedes’ production models but is being applied in some hybrid supercars, including Ferrari models.
