Japan’s Henn na Hotel has pioneered this transformation by replacing human receptionists with humanoid robots. Henn na Hotel, which translates to “Strange Hotel,” first opened its doors in Nagasaki in 2015 with the bold vision of being run almost entirely by robots. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by a variety of robotic staff. This includes a humanoid female robot who handles check-in and check-out, and a dinosaur robot that speaks English, adding a unique, quirky touch to the guest experience. In the cloakroom, a large robotic arm stores luggage, while smaller robots deliver luggage to rooms.

Beyond the initial novelty, the hotel’s adoption of AI and robotics aimed to improve efficiency and reduce operational costs. The robots are programmed to handle routine tasks, allowing human staff to focus on more complex issues and personalized guest services when needed. While the hotel initially faced some challenges, such as robots struggling with specific requests or guest interactions that required more nuanced understanding, they have continuously refined their systems.

The trend of automation in the hospitality industry is not unique to Henn na Hotel. Many hotels worldwide are experimenting with AI-powered chatbots for customer service, robotic room service deliveries, and automated cleaning solutions.
