40 Professions AI is Poised to Eliminate

The rise of artificial intelligence is fundamentally changing how we work, and in some cases, which jobs even exist. A new study from Microsoft Research highlights the professions most vulnerable to AI’s impact. These include roles like journalism, translation, and customer service—jobs often involving easily replicable digital tasks.

Microsoft’s research points to professions heavily reliant on written or verbal communication, such as translators, writers, customer service reps, call center agents, and sales personnel, as prime candidates for automation. AI systems like Copilot and ChatGPT are increasingly capable of handling these duties, as they often involve content creation, data processing, or communication that doesn’t require human interaction.

Notably, Microsoft itself has laid off over 15,000 employees this year, with AI integration playing a significant role. While the company promotes generative AI as an efficiency booster, its practical effect has been a reduction in human staff. Features like Copilot, now integrated into Office 365 and Windows, can complete many routine tasks without human involvement.
